2008 PVCA Annual Clinic @
Penn State .....
Ryan Patton Workshop
Received the following email from Ryon ..... I told people who attended my
clinic session on 2/9 that if they e-mailed me if they wanted me to send
them the charts I use and discussed. Many people did, but I was on the road
to prevent a quick reply. In the meantime, my e-mail at school has switched
where it is being stored (from my PC to a Mercyhurst server, apparently) and
I’ve lost all old messages…so I don’t know who to send my stuff to. Is there
any way you can post this so that people can perhaps get in touch with me
again so that I can send them the charts? I’ll even send them to people who
didn’t attend my session! Thanks - Ryan Patton, Head Volleyball Coach,
Mercyhurst College, (814) 824-2227,

2008 PVCA Annual Clinic @
Penn State .....
What a weekend. ..... Russ Rose, Larry Bock and Melissa Myers kicked things
off Friday afternoon, reminding us that coaching is much more than
technique, systems and X's and O's..... Some snow on Saturday got us off to
a nervous start but all the speakers showed up and all the Hall of Fame
Inductees made it. With some musical chairs going on the last few years,
everything under one roof on Saturday went well ….. A great luncheon
including the induction of the 2008 Hall of Fame members ..... PSU men win
two matches. Can't believe there have ever been more people in South gym!
Even Dr. Tom Tait was present. What a great home court advantage. And
Saturday, one could again stretch their legs with a return to Rec Hall. And
with the spotlight on the men, there was still time to recognize the women's
championship (for more information concerning the PSU men, check out our "Emails
from Mark") ..... And of course, great presentations by great clinicians
- from collegiate's best to our own home grown high school experts .... The
clinic was an organizational masterpiece put together by Karen Price. Thanks
to Tod and Donna McPherson for coordinating the facilities and luncheon.
Thanks to Jay Heefner for hosting the Hall of Fame ceremony. Thanks to Don
Barton and his staff for coordinating the registration. Finally, thanks to
Bob Miller and Rich Schall for the many tasks they take care of during the
weekend.
Various
observations and thoughts from the weekend ..... ….. Approximately 200
coaches attended the clinic ….. Names of athletes for the PVCA scholarships
should be forwarded to Rich Schall. Include name and school of the athlete,
as well as their coach's name ..... It was decided to change the PVCA
Regional All-Star matches from a district versus district format to single
events for each district ….. Procedures for selecting the Girls' All-State
Teams will be revised to include a single meeting with a committee of
coordinator and representatives from throughout the state ….. PVCA lifetime membership will be raised
from $100 to $200 effective July 1, 2008. The $100 price will be in effect
until the end of June ….. Discussions are still ongoing concerning the
optional use of a colored ball and the format for the state championships
….. Bob Kasun of Altoona will replace Jay Heefner as newsletter editor, with
the hope of adding sponsors and color photographs to the publication.
Special thanks to Jay for his work over the years. Members are urged to
submit information from all levels of our sport (high school, club and
college). It is, after all, our newsletter …..
Rich Schall is
Pennsylvania
Proud .....
We all know
how proud Rich is of his family and grandchildren. He is equally proud to
announce that as of this weekend, the PVCA has a membership of 571. This is
the highest number ever!! Let's all continue to help keep this number
growing. I'm sure we know of potential members within our own schools,
league and districts.

PVCA
Hall of Fame Class of 2008 Inducted .....
The PVCA has inducted
the class of 2008 into the Pennsylvania Volleyball Hall of Fame. Had to be
one of the best luncheons. The recipients were funny, emotional and inspiring.
John Quinn and Paul Bull reminded us of the people from the past who paved
the way. Jenn Flynn Oldenburg showed how important this game is in our
lives. The 3 teams showed that Pennsylvania is the hotbed of collegiate
volleyball. Donna Pfeifer surely has a future on "Last Comic Standing". Sue
Masenheimer and Cindy Rinehart, representing the York Officials Chapter,
demonstrated that coaches and officials alike, are at the core of high
school volleyball. Coaches of the state championship teams set the bar for
what we aspire to be. The new members are listed below. Past members
can be seen at the following link (click
here).
Paul J. Bull (Official &
Player), Jennifer Flynn Oldenburg (Ohio State and National Team Player), John T. Quinn (Coach, Official
& Player), 2007 Penn State
Women's Team, 2006 Penn State Men's Team, 2005 Juniata Women's Team.
Additional areas of
recognition included Donna Pfeifer (Rich Schall Lifetime Service Award) and
York County Officials Chapter (PVCA Benefactor Award).

PIAA Volleyball Steering Committee Meeting .....
Bob Miller attended the PIAA steering committee meeting on December 20,
2007. The following items were discussed .....
* Motion made to retain
our competitions at 24 instead of the new 22.
* We will begin the new two year cycle with the start of the girls’ 2008
season. The cut off numbers for “A” are 1-187, “AA”188-424, “AAA” are 425
and above. Schools may choose to play up but may not move down! Using
District 7 as an example- “A” lost one state qualifying representative and
“AAA” lost one state qualifying representative. The playoff structure is in
its first draft but for example District 3 has 3 reps playing in the Western
Regional and District 1-4 is in the Western Regional.
* A motion was made to have a two week playoff system. No teams would play
until the Saturday following District playoffs. The format on that Saturday
would be to bring 4 teams to 4 sites, in each classification, and play a
round robin of three games against each opponent. The top two teams from
each site would move on. (This is the format that had been taking place for
the quarter finals- the past three years at Central York High School). The
next regional match-up would take place on the following Wednesday. The
semi-finals would be held on Saturday morning for all classifications at the
newly selected site. The finals would follow the semi finals on Saturday
afternoon and evening.
* We are still pursuing the optional use of a red-white-blue ball for match
and tournament play. The NFHS has not, as of yet, authorized the placement
of their stamp on the colored balls- Their meeting is in January.
* We are asking that Districts provide coaches with a form to be used by the
coaches to evaluate officials after each match.

Penn State .....
NCAA Champions !!!
As
Yogi Berra said "This is like deja vu all over again." In 1999, Penn State
beat Stanford for its first ever NCAA title. Fast forward to 2007 and "deja
vu", Penn State again beats Stanford. While it appeared there may again be a
three game sweep, this year it took all five games (30-25, 30-26, 23-30,
19-30, 15-8). Check out the links below. Russ was also named 2007 Division I
AVCA National Coach of the Year.

2007 PIAA State Volleyball Championships .....
Another season comes to an end with two exciting days of competition. Three
new state champions have been crowned. AAA - Allentown Central
Catholic defeated Garden Spot (25-14, 25-16, 25-12). AA - Merion Mercy
defeated Maplewood (25-17, 25-18, 25-21). A - Reading Central Catholic
defeated Cochranton (20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 2 5-18, 15-8). Congratulations to
coaches Laurie Corcoran (AAA), Rich Johnson (AA), Shannon McNeil (A) and
their staffs as well as the runnerup coaches Dennis Werner (AAA), Sheila
Bancroft (AA) and Marci Malliard (A).
Comments from the
Championships ….. Many teams brought supportive groups of fans, but the
largest and most colorful goes to Garden Spot, enjoying their first state
appearance ….. The new pool play format on Friday appeared to be an
improvement. It made a shorter day for each of the three classifications …..
The benches on Friday were repositioned to allow hitters some more room to
approach but they kept the scoring tables were they had been ….. PCN again
did their usual great job of televising all three championships. Check the
PCN schedule for rebroadcasts. Special thanks to Parkland coach Mike Krouse
and Gary Sutton for their announcing skills ….. Andrew Schall was present
for his first volleyball match. Who is Andrew? Ten day old son of Mike and
Sarah Schall and grandson of Rich Schall and nephew of North Allegheny
semifinalist coach Dan Schall. So what took you so long to get him to a
volleyball contest? ….. Reading
Central Catholic was the first team in the rally score era to win a
championship after losing the first two games and winning
the last three. They were also the first team to win back to back
championships …..
