2009 PVCA Annual Clinic @
Penn State .....
Another great clinic is over
.. The "step out of the box" for this year
seemed successful. Attendance was up. The change of date from February to
December worked for many old regulars and first-timers as well. Great
volleyball was still on the agenda, although now it was the women instead of
the men. No Hall of Fame Induction but next year we will be back to continue
honoring deserving members of the volleyball community
.. Nila Straka &
Janice Kruger, Russ Rose and Tyke Steiner kicked off the weekend at the
Ramada
.. A trip to Rec Hall provided further sessions and a chance to see
Penn State win its first round NCAA
matchup
.. An interesting note from the Penn / Army game - Army was making
its first NCAA appearance and was well-represented by their fans. It was
certainly moving to watch the Army team and fans snap to attention for the
National Anthem. Even more exciting was when the music "didn't work". No
problem with Army in the house. They started singing and everybody followed.
Saturday at
the new site also went well, although the weather left us wondering if it
was February at State College. The accommodations were more than adequate
allowing easy transitions from session to sessions, and to lunch. Not to
mention the great food for breakfast and lunch
.. Saturday was filled with
workshops to fulfill everybody's needs and level of experience. The panel
discussions continue to be popular as we listen to and learn from our own
coaches
..Saturday night marked the last home match for the 2009 PSU women.
An easy win against Penn was their good-bye present, as they continued on
their road to a third NCAA Championship.
Special thanks
are extended to
.. The clinic was another organizational masterpiece put
together by Karen Price. Thanks to Tod and Donna McPherson for coordinating
the new facilities and luncheon. Thanks to Don Barton and his staff for
coordinating the registration. Finally, thanks to Bob Miller and Rich Schall
for the many tasks they take care of during the weekend.

2009
PIAA State Volleyball Championships .....
The Championships are over. Three
champions have been crowned. An exciting two days has come to a close.
Congratulations to winners Bishop Shanahan
(AAA - coach Greg Ashman), Merion Mercy (AA
- coach Rich Johnson), and
Northern Cambria
(A - coach Mike Hogan). Also congratulations to runners-up
Allentown Central Catholic (AAA - coach
Laurie Corcoran),
Brandywine Heights
(AA - coach Mike Pienta), and Reading Holy Name
(A - coach Rick Fidler).

Notes from the
PIAA Championships
.. Bishop Shanahan won their first state championship.
Merion Mercy made it three in a row and their fourth overall. Northern
Cambria notched championship number two. The runners-up were no stranger to
the championship match. Allentown CC has three titles in its history.
Brandywine and Reading Holy Name both have one previous championship
.. There were
many exciting matches throughout the two day tournament. The final AAA
matches on Friday were some of the best.
Mt. Lebanon and Allentown CC squared
off in pool B, with Hempfield and Bishop Shanahan going at it in Pool A. All
teams were 2-0 with the semi-final matchups on the line. ACC and Bishop
Shanahan came out the winners, with ACC winning on two net/let serves in a
row. Maybe Laurie could share her secrets on that skill at the clinic. These
four teams also needed 9 of the ten possible games (I'm sorry, sets) to
determine the semifinals winners on Saturday
.. Northern Cambria won the
"best fans" contest hands down
.. The private school vs public school and
the east vs west debate will always take place. Would think that for the
present year, those debates would have a clear answer. Always remember that
history and tradition go in cycles. Seems that over time, all of
Pennsylvania should be proud of its high school volleyball
.. Will the
announcer at states ever stop making announcements while games are in
progress?
Thanks
.. A
special thanks to Marty Trimmer and his staff at Central
York High School for hosting
this event
.. Thanks also to Rich Schall for sitting through all matches of
the two day event and coordinating the All-Tournament Teams .... Thanks to
Mike Krause (coach of Parkland) and Gary Sutton for providing the play-by play commentary on the PCN
telecasts of the three final matches
.. And let's not forget to thank the
officials. As the over used clichι goes, it's a hard job, but someone's got
to do it.
End of Season
Notes
.. Special thanks to the folks that spearheaded and coordinated the
Top Ten Poll ..... Denny Werner (Garden Spot) & Kristine Ruppert (Schaler) -
AAA, Mike Pienta (Brandywine) - AA, and Rob Schmidt (Cambridge Springs) -
Thanks also to Bob Kasun, coach at Bishop Guilfoyle for his help in
releasing the top ten programs to the newspapers throughout Pennsylvania
..... Hope everybody can make the annual clinic. Mark your calendars for
Friday & Saturday, December 4-5, 2009. Christmas can wait. Watch the PSU
women start their trek toward a third championship.

Sponsors for PVCA Newsletter .....
Being old as dirt, I remember black and white television and the eventual
change to color (I think our household was one of the last to get a new
color TV when I was a kid). Now I can also remember when the 2008 PVCA fall newsletter
was our first
to contain color. This change was a results of our association with our
first
partner ..... Sports Imports. Please keep them in mind for your volleyball needs.
Sports
Imports .....

When it comes to indoor volleyball equipment, you can't
beat Sports Imports. At the school I teach and coach, we have been using
Senoh equipment for thirty years (we also use their badminton standards and
nets). We still have the first pair of standards we purchased at Red Lion.
We are in the process of building a new field house. Sports Imports will not
only be our equipment of choice, but they have been invaluable in the
planning of our new facility.
Check out their web site (click
here). Also don't miss their "Drill & Tips"" page (click
here), a must for every volleyball coach.
Contact Neil Gilbert who is the sales representative for
Pennsylvania ..... email
ngilbert@sportsimports.com ..... phone 800-556-3198. Neil will also be
at our PVCA clinic at Penn State if you need to talk with him..
