Dig Pink .....
I am emailing you today to ask for your help in
spreading the word to the Pennsylvania High School Volleyball Coaches about
The Side-Out Foundation and the DiG PiNK October Breast Cancer Awareness
Rally. DiG PiNK is the brand of a growing community of volleyball coaches,
players, and events across the country with the specific purpose of
combining sport and philanthropy to raise money for Breast Cancer research
and supporting services. You may have seen the TV game or attended the match
Russ Rose hosted for DiG PiNK last year.
High School teams would host a featured volleyball match during October
(Breast Cancer Awareness Month). The event would promote Breast Cancer
education by encouraging players and fans to wear pink t-shirts, by
distributing educational material, collecting donations, and focusing on how
individuals can help!
The emphasis of DiG PiNK is to raise community awareness of Breast Cancer
and what individuals can do to eradicate the disease; however, fund-raising
is encouraged and welcomed. Our foundation's goal for 2009 is to raise 1
Million dollars. Last year the sport of volleyball rose over $650,000
dollars for Breast Cancer. We are currently working on only a select few
states and I hope we can bring Pennsylvania on as well.

Go to www.side-out.org and see the great work we are doing. Teams can sign
up to host a DiG PiNK event. All they have to do is fill out the on line
information request and then fax back the EVENT COMMITMENT FORM. We are
currently updating our teams web page feature. We plan for this to be
completed and ready for teams to use by early July. This is a great tool for
the teams and donors to watch their fundraising efforts.
I would like to introduce you to our DiG PiNK(R) October rally activity and
see if there might be a place for us in the Pennsylvania programs.
Respectfully, Janice Kruger, Board of Directors The Side-Out Foundation,
Former Head Volleyball Coach -University of Maryland .....

Notes from the PIAA
Championships .....
For the second year the
venue of the Multisport Indoor Facility was used instead of Rec Hall.
Seating was cozy but sufficient.
Maplewood
would probably get the nod for most and best fans. Was interested to learn
that many matches in District 10 get a thousand fans and at times close to
two thousand. It would be nice if the Sport Courts could be set up to allow
more room to run down balls and perhaps cut down on replays from balls from
other courts. I would personally also like to see the announcements by the
PIAA and marketing events be held when play was not in progress. And
finally, again on a personal note, it would be great if semis & finals or
just finals could be held in Rec Hall.
Everybody seemed in
agreement that it was great to see District 10 get a second entry into the
tournament. It would have been even better if the prearranged brackets had
not matches up Ambridge and Cambridge Springs in the first round.
See the following link for an article concerning this decision .....
http://www.meadvilletribune.com/sports/local_story_133235548.html
There is always the
interesting discussion of East versus West. You be the judge. Overall
tournament
.. In AAA, District 7 had three teams, District 2 & 11 had two
teams and District 1 had one. In AA, District 3 7 & 2 had two teams,
District 12 & 10 had one team. Semis & Finals
.. In AAA, District 7 had two
teams, District 3 & 11 had one team. In AA, District 7 had two teams,
District 3 & 10 had one team
.. The AAA champ from the East and the AA
champ from the West.
The PVCA's own and
Parkland girls coach, Mike Krouse, continues to supply the outstanding
commentary for the PCN broadcasts of the championship finals.
Thanks also to PCN and announcer Gary Sutton .....

Summer Coaching Clinics .....
This web site receives many emails throughout the year about coaching
clinics. Since many of you are tied up with club coaching during the PVCA
Clinic here are two summer options.
Revolution Coaching Clinic @ Dallastown High School .....
Received the following from Mike and Sarah Schall ..... We want to take this
opportunity to announce our two summer camps for 2009 at Hagerstown, MD and
Dallastown, PA. We would appreciate any assistance you can give us in
passing the information on to any interested players in your program. While
the camp is being run under the name of Revolution Camps, the camp is open
to any player interested in becoming a better volleyball player, regardless
of club or school affiliation. Our camps will be run by Mike Schall, former
assistant women's volleyball coach at Penn State and founder and director of
Revolution Volleyball Club. Our camp philosophy is to provide young
student-athletes with quality instruction, a positive and competitive
learning environment, and the resources necessary to achieve success. The
staff possesses a wealth of experience in teaching athletes of all ages and
ability levels and is committed to seeing each athlete strive to reach their
full potential.
We
also would like to invite you to a FREE Coaches Clinic at the Dallastown
Camp. One session will be offered on Saturday July 18th from 10am
- 1 pm prior to the Dallastown, PA camp. Coaches are welcomed and encouraged
to stay for and observe the camp.

2009 PVCA Annual Clinic @
Penn State .....

Another great
clinic is over ..... While attendance was about 150, even that was not bad
considering Valentine's Day, the Presidents weekend holiday and the many
coaches tied up with club events
.. Mark Pavlik, Tom Tait and Dave Yukelson
kicked off the weekend Friday afternoon at the Ramada. Although not in the
conference center but the Atrium, tables instead of chairs allowed the
somewhat cramped facilities to work fine. Although the occasional sound of
fun in the pool drifted over to our activities, all went well. Coach Pavlik
took us through the steps as his team won a national championship. Dr. Tait
made us all rethink what it takes to build a great program. Dr. Yukelson
once again showed us that volleyball is a game of the mind as well as the
body
.. A trip to Rec Hall gave us a chance to see the PSU women in action,
always a highlight of the clinic. The men quickly dispatched Harvard Friday
evening. Great to be in Rec Hall instead of South Gym for both matches this
year.
Saturday at
the new C3 Sports Complex also went well. The accommodations were more than
adequate allowing easy transitions from session to sessions, and to lunch.
Not to mention the great food for breakfast and lunch
.. Saturday was
filled with workshops to fulfill everybody's needs and level of experience.
The panel discussions continue to be popular as we listen to and learn from
our own coaches
.. Saturday night proved a great finale as 4,000 plus
packed Rec Hall to watch the men beat Ohio State as well as recognize the
accomplishments of Penn State winning the 2008 NCAA championships.

Karan Price
has asked that coaches would contact her regarding topics for next year and
presenters that they would like to hear from. Coaches could just email her
their suggestions (email click here).
Special thanks
are extended to
.. The clinic was another organizational masterpiece put
together by Karen Price. Thanks to Tod and Donna McPherson for coordinating
the new facilities and luncheon. Thanks to president Bob Miller for hosting
the Hall of Fame ceremony. Thanks to Don Barton and his staff for
coordinating the registration. Finally, thanks to Bob Miller and Rich Schall
for the many tasks they take care of during the weekend.
PVCA Hall of Fame Class of 2009 Inducted .....
The PVCA has inducted the
class of 2009 into the Pennsylvania Volleyball Hall of Fame. Had to be one
of the best luncheons. The new location was more than adequate to meet our
needs. The recipients were emotional and inspiring. Joe Boland and George
Eastburn set the bar for District 1. Having both of the Penn State teams in
attendance to recognize their national championships was a treat. The
Juniata Men rounded out the teams to show again why
Pennsylvania
is the hotbed of collegiate volleyball. Donna Brady was recognized with the
Rich Schall Lifetime Service Award displaying the strong link between
coaches and officials. Coaches of the state championship teams showed us
with their accomplishments what we all aspire to be. The new members are
listed below. Past members can be seen at the following link (click
here).
Joe Boland (Villa Maria High School), George
Eastburn (Pennsbury High School), 2008 Penn State Women's Team (Coach Russ
Rose), 2008 Penn State Men's Team (Coach Mark Pavlik), 2007 2006 2005 2004
1998 Juniata Men's Team (Coach Jeremy Price and Coach Heather Pavlik)

Summary of Items from the 2009 PVCA Council Meeting and
General Membership Meeting .....
The newsletter is always looking for
submissions and ideas. Contact Bob Kasun at !-814-942-3990 or
bobkasun@winbeam.com
.. Nominations for our scholarships should be made
to Rich Schall at 1-724-537-4391 or
schallresbjs@verizon.net. Include the name of the athlete and the school
.. Rich has retired from the girls All-State project. While always
available as a consultant, a number of committee members (different people
for each of the classifications) would meet and hammer out the list.
Possibly in conjunction with the Hall of Fame meeting in December. Matt
Wilson will continue to coordinate the boys side
.. District All-Star
matches are alive and well on the girls' side. The boys' side has problems
with timing (end of school, graduation, beach week, club ball, etc). The
PVCA will continue to provide shirts for the events
.. It was decided that
the PVCA could learn from studying other PA high school coaching
associations
.. The PVCA will be developing guidelines for advertising and
links with the newsletter and web site
.. The date of our annual clinic is
a problem. The conflict with club tournaments at Penn State and other sites during the
weekend of our meeting is causing a downward trend in our attendance.
Suggestions would be to move the clinic earlier in the school year, possibly
to coincide with the opening round of the NVAA Women's Championships in
early December
.. The issue of East Stroudsburg dropping down the men's
volleyball program from varsity to club status was discussed. The question
of what we can do as an association and what can our members do, will be
researched
.. The stipend for the president and two vice-presidents was
raised to $250
.. A new slate of officers for the term of office from
7/1/10 through 6/30/13 was developed
.. The membership meeting approved
minutes from last year, budget with expenditures, new salary increases and
talked about the date of the clinic
.. Coaches wished to pursue an 8 second
service time upfrom 5 seconds, a standard 20 minute warm-up (8-6-6) to be
brought to the PIAA summer workshop.

Sponsors for PVCA Newsletter .....
Being old as dirt, I remember black and white television and the eventual
change to color (I think our household was one of the last to get a new
color TV when I was a kid). Now I can also remember when the 2008 PVCA fall newsletter
was our first
to contain color. This change was a results of our association with two
partners ..... Training for Volleyball & Sports Imports. Please keep our two
friends in mind for your volleyball needs.
Training for
Volleyball DVD from Barry Lovelace .....

Help your team and the PVCA at the same
time. Anyone purchasing this DVD will earn a commission for your coaching
organization. This is volleyball specific training information. It will
increase your vertical jump, increase power, record more digs, kills and
blocks as well as greatly improve your overall finesse and athletic ability.
Unique training procedures from Barry Lovelace.

Sports
Imports .....

When it comes to indoor volleyball equipment, you can't
beat Sports Imports. At the school I teach and coach, we have been using
Senoh equipment for thirty years (we also use their badminton standards and
nets). We still have the first pair of standards we purchased at Red Lion.
We are in the process of building a new field house. Sports Imports will not
only be our equipment of choice, but they have been invaluable in the
planning of our new facility.
Check out their web site (click
here). Also don't miss their "Drill & Tips"" page (click
here), a must for every volleyball coach.
Contact Neil Gilbert who is the sales representative for
Pennsylvania ..... email

at our PVCA clinic at Penn State if you need to talk with him..
