2011
PVCA Annual Clinic @
Penn
State .....
Another great clinic
is over ….. Not sure of the exact final count, but I think about 100 coaches
took advantage of a great weekend of volleyball. On Friday, Russ Rose kicked
off the weekend as our keynote speaker at the Ramada. More education
followed in South gym before the volleyball match. Saturday was one great
session after another at the middle school. If you didn't leave with tons of
information and ideas, you must have been sleeping. A new twist was a social
at Harrigan's, that was well attended. The fellowship and networking with
coaches is always one the greatest aspects of the weekend.
Special thanks are extended
to ….. The clinic was another organizational masterpiece put together by
Karan Price. Karan would welcome thoughts and feedback on any aspect of the
clinic (
karanprice@aol.com ). Thanks to Julie Miller for coordinating the
facilities. Thanks to Don Barton and his staff for coordinating the
registration. Thanks to Daryl Wessner for the many time consuming tasks his
job entails.
Finally,
the PSU Women took care of business against Liberty on
Friday and Delaware on Saturday. They even took time out from their busy
weekend to attend our luncheon and for the 2010 team to be inducted into the
PVCA Hallof Fame.
2011 Hall of
Fame .....
The 2011 PVCA Hallof Fame Induction Ceremony took place on Saturday,
December 3, 2011. There were eight inductees.
Laurie Corcoran (Allentown Central Catholic coach),
Kaleena Davidson (Penn State player),
Rick Fidler (Berks Catholic coach),
Priscilla Gibbony (Huntingdon coach),
Kim Glass (University of Arizona player),
Dennis Hohenshelt (PSU assistant coach),
Rick Tatrn (Deer Lakes coach), and
the 2010 Penn State Women's Team. The
Rich Schall Lifetime Service award was presented to
Don Barton (former West York coach) and
Karan Price (Altoona coach). The PVCA Benefactor Award was
presented to Gina Barton and
Dale Flickinger for their service to the
PVCA and sport of volleyball.

2011
PIAA State Volleyball Championships .....
The Championships are
over. Three champions have been crowned. An exciting two days has come to a
close. Congratulations to winners
Parkland (AAA - coach Mike Krause),
Brandywine
Heights
(AA - coach Mike Pienta), and Linesville
(A - coach Tim Schliecher). Also congratulations to runners-up
Hempfield (AAA - coach Patrick
Shawaryn),
Southern
Lehigh (AA - coach Don West), and
Clarion
(A - coach Shari Campbell).
Scores from championship
finals ..... AAA -
Parkland defeated Hempfield (21-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-17) ..... AA -
Brandywine defeated
Southern Lehigh (23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 26-24) ..... A - Linesville defeated
Clarion (25-20, 25-16, 25-22)
Notes from the PIAA
Championships …..
Parkland and Linesville have earned their first state championship
..... PVCA Hall of Fame Coach Mike Pienta earned his second state
championship trophy, to go along with two runner-up finishes ..... Of the
eight teams in the semis, seven were the number one seed from their
district. Brandywine
was the number two seed ..... All three champions were from different
districts. AAA - Parkland (D11). AA - Brandywine (D3). A - Linesville (D10)
..... The semis in both AAA and AA were District 3 versus District 11. AAA -
Parkland (D11) vs Hempfield (D3). AA - Brandywine (D3) vs Southern Lehigh
(D11) ..... Both Hempfield and Clarion were able to return to the
championship match for the second year in a row ..... In the semis, both AAA
and AA had the same district mix. Two D7 teams, one from D3, one from D11
..... A very high level study was done on Saturday. Do coaches "sit or
stand". In the semi-finals - 7 coaches stood and 5 coaches sat. In the
finals - 2of 3 championship coaches "sat" to win.
A new look for states .....
Long time announcer Bruce Fassnacht was recognized and honored for his many
years of service. Bruce sadly passed away. A presentation to his wife and
family took place prior to the AAA championship match. Cindy Rinehart took
over his announcing responsibilities ..... Parkland coach
Mike Krause took on a new role this year. Instead of his usual place with
Gary Sutton and PCN, his team was on the court and won! Not only can the
Parkland girls play, they can also sing. While holding their championship
trophy, they belted out their rendition of “Happy Birthday”. And who were
they singing to? None other than their coach. What a birthday present.
Thanks ….. A special thanks
to Marty Trimmer and his staff at Central York High School for hosting this
event ….. Thanks also to Rich Schall for sitting through all matches of the
two day event and coordinating the All-Tournament Teams .... Thanks to Gary
Sutton and Mike Elliot for providing the play-by play commentary on the PCN
telecasts of the three final matches ….. Dan Smith once again provided the
announcing for the spectators during the three championship matches ......
And let's not forget to thank the officials. As the over-used cliché goes,
it's a hard job, but someone's got to do it.
End of Season Notes
….. Special thanks to the folks that spearheaded and coordinated the Top Ten
Poll ..... Denny Werner (Garden Spot) & Kristine Ruppert (Schaler) - AAA,
Mike Pienta (Brandywine) - AA, and Rob Schmidt (Cambridge Springs) ….. Hope
everybody can make the annual clinic. Mark your calendars for Friday &
Saturday, December 2-3, 2011. Christmas can wait. Hopefully we can watch the
PSU women start their trek toward a fifth championship.

New PVCA
President .....
Matt
Wilson has assumed the leadership as president of the PVCA following the
move of Mike Schall out of the state. Most of us know Matt as the head boys’
coach at Northeastern, where he has built them into one of the top programs
in the state. They were PIAA AA champs in 2010 and runners-up in 2011. We
are fortunate to have Matt bring his outstanding coaching and leadership
skills to our organization. When not coaching, he is a financial advisor at
Ameriprise Financial.

Dig Pink is The Side-Out Foundation’s trademark name
for its fundraising events. A Dig Pink event can be organized at the local,

Sponsors for PVCA Newsletter .....
Being old as dirt, I remember black and white television and the eventual
change to color (I think our household was one of the last to get a new
color TV when I was a kid). Now I can also remember when the 2008 PVCA fall
newsletter was our first to contain color. This change was a results of our
association with our first partner ..... Sports Imports. Please keep them in
mind for your volleyball needs.
Sports
Imports .....

When it comes to indoor volleyball equipment, you can't
beat Sports Imports. At the school I teach and coach, we have been using
Senoh equipment for thirty years (we also use their badminton standards and
nets). We still have the first pair of standards we purchased at Red Lion.
We are in the process of building a new field house. Sports Imports will not
only be our equipment of choice, but they have been invaluable in the
planning of our new facility.
Check out their web site (click
here). Also don't miss their "Drill & Tips"" page (click
here), a must for every volleyball coach.
Contact Neil Gilbert who is the sales representative for
Pennsylvania ..... to email him

at our PVCA clinic at Penn State if you need to talk with him..

Mark Pavlik sends out emails updating folks on what is going on with the

Pavlik sends to friends and alumni of PSU. Because of this, they may contain
references that only the "insiders" know about. However, if you want to keep
up to date from the "inside", click the following link and enjoy. (click
